Hi
I have a 954 , seem to be quite rare , am trying to fit girvin vector 2 , but seem to have a problem that the steerer is 1" , been to all the bike shops in my area and they just scratch their heads . I know they must be able to go on but how ? I will try and post some pictures of what ive got , hopefully someone will be able to tell me what i need to complete my bike .
Please help its affecting my sleep (http://photos-e.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v354/224/96/573832537/n573832537_1445124_8751.jpg)

vector steerers come in 1" - you need a special shims to get it to work with 1 1/8". Should have come with the fork.
-
just looked at tech sheet on K2bikes and seem to have all the bits except what they call the 1 1/8" headset spacer that i guess goes on the t0p part of the threadless a headset . can you not get that with the headset , its just a spacer to bring it down to the 1" steerer ?
If not where can i get one from ?
Thanks for the reply
-
I just went through this with mine-whoever put it together last had the spacer turned upside down so it was in the stem spacers rather than in the headset, leaving a lot of wiggle room. Before I had the tools to take it apart, I bought a 1" to 1-1/8" spacer on ebay for about $3. If you can't find one, send me your address and I'll post this one to you since I don't need it...but I'm deployed in Iraq so it may take 2 weeks if you're in the US and longer elsewhere.

I think you just need a 1" to 1 1/8" shim (or better, two) to silde under the ULM to stop that wriggling then into your headset and stem. Probably not making myself clear... basically you need 2 shims slid down the steerer - one under the ULM, the other in your headset and under your stem. Probably still not clear. Trying my best!
-
Thanks for all the help , i hope you like the pictures , must admit not entirely clear but im a lot more hopefull now of sorting something out .
Am going to the bike shop on monday armed with my new info off you guys so hopefully will get somewhere .
When its all together will post a picture of the whole bike as the rear sus set up is different to other proflex that ive seen too .
Am hoping to change the elastomer to a spring on the rear if i can do it , hoping callum from rapid decent may eventually answer on another forum , not much luck so far .
Are these 954 rare ?
Thanks all
-
yes, have only ever seen 2 pass through ebay.
-
any decent bike shop shoold be able to help. You need two "spacers" one at the top and on at the bottom to "shim" each set of 1 and 1/8 bearings down to the 1 inch steerer.
-
i have these shim's fitted to my bike. i was lucky enough to have got these with my frame!
your old h/set need's to come out and these shim's go directly into your h/tube. 1 in the top & 1 in the bottom
they look like top hat's..the shim is about 1" long with a collar around the top which fit's snug to
the top & bottom of your h/tube and fit in the same way as fitting a h/set..
there a really tight fit and i thought i was gonna split my h/tube so go steady!!
now all that's left to do is fit your new 1" h/set directly into these shim's....
954 are rare top of the range from 94 and was built up using xt and weighed in at around 24lbs
but using today's sram or shimano i dont see why you cant see 22lbs!!!! ssswwweeeeeeeeettt..
in 94 it was voted as best climbing full sus bike money could buy....i want 1 but it need's to be 16" as im a fraction taller then an umper lumper!!!
have fun!!!!

Thanks again chaps , accually cant wait till monday so going to a bike shop today instead. Will let you know the outcome . A little nervous as i cant see why no bike shop could help me yesterday seems all quite simple to me .
Does anyone have trouble opening Bikepedia .com as they have pictures of a 954 on there apparently but i cant open the pictures . Would someone be so kind to see if they can open it then copy a picture onto this thread so i can see/ compare to mine .
Just out of interest how much is my 954 worth , im looking forward to me posting a picture of it finished for you all to see for the help .
It has mavic rims hope hubs magura raceline brakes xt gear and looks pretty nice condition .
Cheers all , now off to the bike shop .

Thanks for that Orange , thats what I have here , mine fortunatly still has all the decals on .Is nice to confirm what i have , plus see that somewhere i will be able to get a coil for the rear shock too. Will be extra nice to callum from rapid decent and see if he can help .
Anyway back from the bike shop :Bought two head sets 1" & 1 1/8" cane creek s3 seemed appriate and also ordered 1 head tube reducer 1 1/8" down to 1" to go in the top only .
So seeing as the 1 1/8" will fit straight onto the steerer at the bottom because of the extra ridge that is shown on the picture i posted use that on the bottom , then put the reducer into the head tube at the top then use the top part of the 1" bearing set then space out with the 1" spacers that i bought , all in black .
Unfortunatly cant do till i get the reducer , may come in Thursday .
Didnt ask in the shop at the time as i got all excited that they could acually help rather than look blank like the guys yesterday . But can i not just get a spacer that fits dirrect into the 1 1/8" cane creek headset so i dont have to split the two ?
Now just need to find an appropiate stem for the 1" steerer something classic old skool the ones in the bike shop today as excited as i was to get it back on the road just didnt look right .
Will keep updated cheers all
-
I am sure my reducers were loose "race within a race",sort of a race with a very wide inner surface...

HI Sid.
That is a really nice Proflex you have there.
Post some pics when you are finished.

UPDATE :
Hi all thought I would keep you all posted to how I am getting on ........
I totally stripped the bike down today to inspect all bearings , seals and washers , then cleaned absolutly everything and reassembled , greasing , lubing every part as should be done . New brake blocks went in the hydrolic brakes and reblead . The gripshifts for the gears are badly perished and i guess i wont be able to replace the rubber grips so i expect i will have to change these , ( reccomendations welcome on that ) All i am waiting on now is a retro 1" stem to be able to complete assembly so will have a good hunt around the shops tommorrow .
As for the rear shock this I dont have a clue on , I have emailed rapid decent and also tried there forum but just dont seem to get a reply , so if anyone can help on that i would be forever greatful .I would like to know if i can put a spring on like in the picture on this thread , My shock has a 75mm spacing where the elastomers are . If i cant fit a spring then which elastomers should i fit from rapid decent as there are various ones ? I would much rather fit a spring though .
The last thing is what do you put in the rear shock , is it oil or grease and how do you know how much to put in . This is all i have to do before i can post a picture of the finished bike up on the forum .
Thanks once again for all your help , to all that have asked I will post various pictures as sone as it is finished , thanks for the interest . P.P.S If someone lets me know how to meaure the frame size , i will let you know that as well , I thought it was from the centre of the crank to the top of the top tube but not entiterly sure .

you'll find some on ebay if you look around, or find some old ones where the grips aren't too damaged and swap them over ;)
in terms of elastomers/springs - stick up a new thread specifically on that subject on this forum, it may catch Callum's (Rapiddescentscotland) eye - he' s posted very recently so is around here.

I am pretty sure that from center of seat tube along top tube to center of head tube is 23 inches for a large frame(Thats what mine are anyway).

Thanks for that purple gerbil , I dont suppose theres any chance scanning the front of the bike in aswell .
Measured up frame and its 18" , mine is not as shiney as the one in the picture though :(
-
sid if you use the scroll bar on the bottom of purple gerbils post you will see both ends of the bike ;)
-
Opps ! ::)
-
i didnt think a 954 had a "shock",therefore a spring will be very bouncy...

Hi Kiwi ,
This is what i dont quite understand and am trying to sort out , is my unit just full of grease and should be hard to push in or should you be able to push it in with out it returning on its own , and how hard should it be to push in , how do i refill it ?
Many thanks
( i was only interested in a coil on the rear as i saw it on the picture on this thread on page 1 so I thought it was possible to do as the unit inside the coil is the same as mine , maybe who everdone it is hanging off a tree as we write ) ???
