Title: What year is my Proflex?
Post by: jeffgothro on July 12, 2008, 03:01:48 pm
Yeah...I'ed like to know what year this frame is, I bought it on ebay, the bikeshop I bought it from has it listed as a 1990 but as far as I know Pro-Flex didnt starting making this design till about 1995 (I could be wrong I dont know)? I believe it has most of the stock OM parts.

The serial namber is H6H011246

Yes - as I mentioned on the other forum possibly a late '95 or early '96 becasue of the slit in the seat tube.

Yep, model year is indicated by the "6", hence 1996.

That is in very nice shape. How many dineros did you pay for it ???

Good show!

$375 is a steal. Get some riding in on it, and let's do a ride. Maybe Sycamore Cyn at Pt. Magu?

a "special" 856 i would say..I think the last of the 96 bikes were sold woth gdt shocks and springs instead of the ODS and MCU suspensions.
To me that bike look brand new!right down to its original velociraptors....Lucky IFO didnt see those!(an in joke for the originals here!)

Not sure what "gdt" or "ODS" and "MCU" are.

[Edit: GDT = Girvin Dampning Technology & ODS = Oil Dampning System] I belive the MCU are the elastomer shocks.

Give the boy a brownie button...lol

Actually I owned one of these 856's before about 8 years ago or so and unfortunatly got into a bind and had to sell it. The one I had back then had a rock shox judy and an elastomer bumper on the back. I hated that bumper...mine was a bit worn when I got it so I replaced it...it took the bike shop 6 months to get it for me. I got 2 sets...one of the bumpers seemed defective and squashed and sagged real bad...so I did some mis-matching with the 2 sets and made a working set. Well, that didnt last long, one of the bumpers seem to get hard and over a year or two began to sag more and more and got to the poibnt to wear it was only like an inch thickl...and I had no rebound, it was like riding a soft hardtail and I had all this play and slop in the rear when I lifted the rear of the bike off the ground. Nonetheless it was my first and favorite fully and I hated having to sell it. Well...I came across this one and knew I had to have it, not only that but my birthday is on the 29th so this is my present. So far I love it as much if not more then my old one, the spring shocks are great...a wee bit soft (although I'm used to hard tails) but over all I couldnt ask for a better bike...its behind me now in my room and I catch myself glancing at it every now and then and just say to myself...WOW!

IMHO 855/856 are the diffinitive Proflex bike  ;D Best climbing and fast full suspension trail/race bike.
Got my (my wife has it now) 856 at the end of 1995 but the 856 as mentioned is a 96 model.

I don't know how that one ended up with GDT shocks, like already mentioned could be a later model except the later model had what is commonly known as the seat tube, the through hole for the brake cable was filled in with a welded plate.

Great buy  ;D

Oh wow, thats hella nice...I saw a guy riding down the beach once on a similar one...I believe it had carbon swing arm and carbon fork legs...noleen shocks F&R.

Yeah...I almost hate swaping the parts out on my bike because I believe it to be nearly original...but damn, the seat is a killer on long rides I found out, I hate it...I think its gonna have to go (or I'll try dropping the nose just a hair), I replaced the Ritchy Clipless pedals already...I dont like the grips either (scram grips stock), and lastly, I may swap the grip shifters out for some XT 8spd ones, the grip shifters tend to ghost shift sometimes, other then that so far it seems perfect the way it is.

I took the bike to a scale the other day...if memory serves me correctly the bike came in at 27...no more then 28 (sorry, my memory is terrible, I actually forgot 10 minuts after I weighed it). It was no more then 28 though that I remember.

You probably saw an 857 if it had Noleens and a carbon swingarm  ;)

I used to have one of them too in Way Big size (red) and Large (Grape colour), but didn't like them as much as my 855 (can't really pinpoint why, just didn't like them as much) so sold them on.

Mabie it had something to do with the carbon fibres ride quality...I owned a Giant Cadex a long time ago, one of the old lugged frames and I didnt like it either, thought the overall ride characteristics felt like crap. I'm actually a steel guy, dont care for aluminum much either...I like it better then carbon or ti though, but that doesnt really apply to a full suspention bike. I do own an aluminum Ironhorse Yakuza, and actually I kinda like it, quite a bit in fact...suprizingly, I would prefer steel but cant really afford a steel frame I would be happy with, not to mention part swaps and upgrades...even more $$$.

i had a 6 and a 7 - the 6's are classic.

make the bike your own - don't worry about original equipment especially the brakes and seat (and the fork)
i guess all that's left is the frame, but that's the part that can't be beat.

when it comes to saddles, nothing beats my 'koobi' -

it is an 856.But the last of the 856 were sold with the gdt etc.Re the ghost shifting and shifters. The ghost shifting is probably caused by the silly short cable between the frame and first swingarm stop. The best fix is to route a oune peice cable(preferably a low friction type from at least the last stop on the frame through the swingarm and onto the rear d.Exaxtly the same now but use housing all the way through the swingarm(eliminate the two stops on the swigarm itself.)The sram/trigger debate is up to you.

Thanks Kiwi, actually on my old 856 I had shimano trigger shifters and I owned that bike 3 years or so I think and if memory serves me I never once did I have to adjust the cables or shifters, if I did it was only a quarter turn on the adj. barrel every once in a great while.

And I was actually considering a DH seat, I had one on my old 856 and loved it. I was gonna put my Flight ti seat on, but its rather old and kinda beat up and thought it looked kinda ragged on a new looking bike so I opted out...changed my mind. The seat I have now aint to bad around town, but anything over 5 miles and I start to feel it after a while.

Dont know if this is an actual DH seat, but its similar to the one I had minus the slit in the middle, this peticular one is leather, ti rails and on sale at performamce bike for 40$. I think the slitdown the middle might be good, my current seat (which I believe is stock) is giving me the most problem in my scrotem area.

Oh wow...great bike Simon, looks like you have some very modern mods going on there, please explain the rear shock linkage, rear disc brake and those little round braze-on thingamajiggys where the brake bosses were?

The rear linkage is based on the Faux bar design
the other little thingamajig things are another mounting for a shorter strut (off which I have made) this give more travel .
Shame I can't find a pic of the rear disc mount (gallery gone  >:(),thats a welded on item with the brake hose traveling through the s/arm.
All this was hand made in my garage, didn't take to long.

Some explanations found here  :).

Thats way cool, thanks for sharing that with me man.

I was thinking the other day after my 856 arived (and while I'm sure other improvements can be made as you have) that the only thing missing (for me personally) I could think of are disk brakes, for the original girvin fork and swing arm.

pay no attention to the barrage of endless improvements for your ProFlex from our resident evil engineering genius Simon -

when caught in his web, he'll have you regularly ripping your bike apart and re-engineering your new frame and all it's systems from the ground up,
the bike will be constantly at the welders or some machine shop and literally, there'll be no time to ride it   ;)

OP

b.t.w. - my mods for cross link disc adaptor should work well for your original girvin fork -
