I'm currently planning upgrades to my "second bike" 857 (mainly because I can't part with it so I'm "forcing" my girlfriend to use it :) ).
I've upgraded the brakes to Magura HS33's and I think the fork is the next port of call.
Do you think I could put 100mm forks on the front? Bearing in mind the Girvin Vector is pretty light I'm loathe to put a ~£100 fork on as they seem to be quite heavy.
If 100mm fork's not an option what's the opinion on putting a second hand pair of Fox F80's on it? I've seen these go on eBay for around £80-150 depending on age, service history and condition.
The Noleen shock on the rear still seems to be holding up (more than 10 years on!). I'm maybe going to look into replacing it with something more up to date in future though. Not got any engineering contacts to make an adapter however and the Risse shocks+ import to the UK looks a little steep.

I would have thought 100mm would be OK - weren't the Chubbies around that mark?
-
100mm is fine and you can always dial in extra sag without changing the spring rate if you found
(which you wont) the steering to be a bit lazy.

Cool, might put my Fox F100's (from my hardtail) on for a test ride in the next couple of weeks then.
I'll be back when there's a budget for a platform rear shock!
Cheers,
Stuart.

Chubbies were indeed a 100mm fork, mounted on the 97 beast and animal. The beast and animal frames were x57 style frames. My beast really benefited by the extra travel.

Hi,
Thought I'd post a followup. I managed to get a pair of Rockshox Reba's from merlincycles for £200. With these on the bike's been great, no appreciable difference in the handling (although I've put a fair bit of sag into the fork). They're starting to loosen up nicely, quite chuffed with the whole setup. I've now got a pair of Crosslink Vectors to "dispose of" but that'll have to wait as there's too much on for eBaying at the moment.
Anyway, thanks for the help.
Cheers,
Stuart.

Stuart have you still got your vectors if so how much are you looking for them? are you in the UK?
cheers dave

Hi,
Yeah, still got them and in the UK (Glasgow). Not sure what they're worth as they've got a few scratches on them. £20+ postage sound fair? I'm about to go on holiday for two weeks but I'll have a look when I get back.
They're 1/8" steerer, no stem version with (I think) the NR1 damper. I can post some pics in a couple of weeks.
Cheers,
Stuart.

I'll take them please (assuming bigdee doesn't get back to you). Let me know as soon as you can. Cheers :-)

Hi,
Still got them, sorry just been really busy. I'll phone you over the next few days to sort it all out. Looks like you're getting a bargain with the £80 suggestion for Crosslinks in another thread:). I'm happy to stick with my original price though, it'll be good to know they're still in use.
Cheers,
Stuart.
