Title: Cables: what do you use?
Post by: jazclrint on May 02, 2008, 08:14:43 pm
I like trying to use the nicest cables I can while advoiding the gimmicky stuff.  What works, and what is hype?  I have hydraulic brakes (the only cure for the rear brake) so all I need are ones for the grip shifts (X.0).
Thanks,
Rich

I believe Gore cables were stopped, but now they are available again.

I have been using the Avid Flack Jacket ones, but that Gore system looks REALLY nice. Have not had the nerve to try the Powercords for shifters, but I like the weight.

And the Nokons just don't look right to me.

One of the mechanics in my shop (Jeff) works here only while he's in school (college town).  But he works in a shop in southern Maine all summer and has for some time.  There is a well respected wrench/racer in his shop down there that swears by them.  Appearently they are quite light and no flex.  But that's just word of mouth.

Jeff, btw, doesn't like the flack jackets.  He said they are great until they get stuff in them, and then it won't come out.  Things are pretty wet/rooty/muddy up here.

I think I've found my next (and possibly last?) cable/housing set.

I have a mix of Gore ride on cables and Jagwire Ripcord, and Avid FlakJackets. TBH al good. the Jagwire ones came with alot more  bits and bobs to make em dirt proof, like little rubber boots, and better cable ends. The thing to do is to run fully enclosed cables, although this can mean drilling out the cable stops , or fitting adapters (Hope). The Gore system is well made,      but XTR is also very good. Also worth a look, if you can find some are Transfil Black snake / flying snake combo

And on the downtube?

On the Zaskar I drilled out the stops in the frame for the Gore / Jawire

The OZ has FlakJackets, and no bare cables in sight.

the inner cables of the gore cables run in their own little casings and have little seals called grubs at each end.So i have casings from bar to frame stop  and from last frame stop through swingarm, but theoretically gunk can only get in at each end.
