Title: Knocked this up today!
Post by: Mr752 on February 21, 2008, 02:47:37 pm
Project XP-8 is nearly done!
I wanted a rear disc mount from Callum at RDS, but he didnt have one I dont think, I knocked this one up out of 4mm, 316L Stainless steel. Made a template from card and then cut it out with an angle grinder(not the template!!!!) and polished it up with a 120grit polishing wheel.
Not a bad effort for a first attempt. Fits spot on and the Juicy 5's Tri-Align fine adjusted it.

Used Stainless steel bolts and cut some 8mm spacers from 12mm stainless instrumentation tube.

Still got some brake hose management issues, Front too long, rear too short not by much but enough to be annoying!
Seatpost wants shortening a bit and got a nice SRAM chain to go on.
Probably going to change out the rear mech for a m772 Shadow and waiting for some Time Atac pedals to arrive.
Will keep you all informed.

Mk 2 might be on the cards,
Thin it out here and there.Mill the thickness down where the axle/skewer seats.
Just trying to convince Mrs752 that a micro lathe and milling attachment from Machine Mart would be a good investment for DIY jobs around the house,
:o she is'nt buying into it at the moment ::)

That bike sure is purty. Makes mine look rather ordinary. :) Nice job on the adapter.

Looks very nice indeed. Your bike is top notch, and looks killer.

thats art!Love the way its follows every contour of the swingarm...to get full marks brake hose must go through swingarm!

Yeah I liked that brake hose through the swingarm jiggery pokery that Simon did with his!
Might need to purchase a longer hose to do it. Need to drill 2 holes in the swingarm and maybe put a bulkhead "o" ring in each.

Good point Orange!
All my bike fettling seems to get done in the dead of night these days when Mrs752 and the little 752's have gone to bed.
Was putting the chain on at 1.30 this morning.
Hope the bike doesnt turn to dust when it gets hit by sunlight first time outside :o

nice job on the crosslink disc setup.

yeah, you have to be careful on the inside edge pending the type of hub that is on the wheel and the distance to the rotor and parts.
i made my end caps from some plastic table leg ends that i picked up at a hardware store - cut them in half and trimmed to fit.

very nice -

congrats

Thanks for that OP,
I spotted some waste segregation bins were made of 1"x1" square tube on the rig i've been on, each open end with a plastic cap on. Liberated 20 of them to cut in half and trim down  like you say.
Originally contacted a few companies on the net for cap ends, places that turned out to have minimum orders of 5000 at UK£32/1000.
One guy set up a link for a smaller order but wanted UK£10 for 10 and £10 p+p.

That is a quality xp-8 you should be chuffed  ;D  and the disc mount for the rear is sweet,  i know who i'm going to hassle when i want discs for my xp-8  ;D ;D

One question though Is there much of a weight penalty for discs over the original V's

Cheers Xp8-er

Thanks for that mate!
Unfortunately yes there is! ???
Each caliper/rotor/mount is approx 400g for Juicy 5's  :-\
Bit less for the Ultimates (333g with 160mm rotor) but still not as light as a good set of canti's
Magura HS-33's hydraulic rim brakes come in at 272g
A lot of it for me is that I enjoy "fettling" in the garage so knocking up the front and back mounts is just part of the fun ;D
