Title: Testing new forum software!
Post by: GrimJack on December 27, 2007, 07:51:53 pm
I've been doing battle with the evil SQL daemons for some time now, and I think I finally have them whipped into some semblance of order.

There is still a lot of work to do, of course, but in theory the latest conversion attempt worked.  This means all the users, threads, posts, instant messages, etc, should all be there.

I would really appreciate any feedback I can get - especially things like missing posts, features, anything that doesn't appear to work right.

So, here's a link to the test forum: http://idriders.com/proflex/smf/index.php

This will give us a bunch of benefits - much lower server load, security that leaps and bounds ahead of the old YaBB software, faster response times, more capacity...  The list of benefits is rather long.

My plan is to fix any problems that come up, then likely wipe it clean and run the conversion once more, at which time I'll shut off the old software and have it redirect to the new installation.  So please keep posting here for the moment, and don't put anything on the test site that you aren't prepared to lose.

Last, but not least, I'll customize the graphics / theme to match.

I like the layout. What little bit I looked at all worked fine. Will this change also help with the junk/spam posters? Thanks for all you do. Brad

It should completely eliminate the junk / spam posters. :)

All looks ok.

Ive recently installed SMF on one of my sites, it seems pretty good, i was impressed by how easy it was to install.  Ihave used Vbulletin up to now with two other forums, but the SMF installed so easy compared to them, im even considering migrating them to SMF.

Not sure what that will be like to do, i gather its not been to straight forward importing the database for this site?

Andy.

I'm migrated a bunch of forums to SMF by now, and most of them were quite simple.

This place, unfortunately, was the exception.  We have a really old installation of YaBB in a couple different ways - we started this place many versions ago, and it's been upgraded many times, AND the current version is several releases out of date.  Add in that we have quite a few users and a whackload of posts, and the conversion utility basically just threw up it's hands in disqust and walked away! :)

I had to hack this quite a bit to make it work, so I'll honestly be quite surprised if it all works quite like it should.

That's supposed to be cracked mudflats!

I suspect that bringing the colour scheme and graphics over to the new software is going to be cake when compared to getting the database conversion to run.

Could a few of you make some posts on the new software?  And send and receive some PMs?  It's important that we try all the functions we can think of - reading, posting, PMs, editing our profiles, etc, and that we check this from every access level - member, moderator, administrator.

I also need to try to delete a member and ban a member... and volunteers?

Odd... your account exists, I checked.  Of course, I can't see your password, but I can reset it, so I did. Then I logged in as you and it worked.

I'll PM you your new password over there.  I guess we might have to go through this again when we do the actual conversion.  Do you have some odd character in your password, something that might not have converted properly?

dave i have an alter ego, douglas johnston ,ban and or delete him...unless of course it works against ip,s in which i will be in trouble!.I am gonna have a look now,i will make a post and see if i can delete a few of the flase registerees.....
if we lose all the old posts thats too bad,but it would sure be cool if the old files and  how toos and links could be retaimed.I would also like orange and shovelon to be made mods perhaps in leui of carbon kiwi and dawn patrol who dont seem to be here much lately...

Why not make it red and yellow, just like the fastest proflex!

Everyone knows the blue ones are slower.

I have a Purple one........by your reasoning, that should make it faster than a Blue one, but not as fast as a Red one.

A spurious theory, I would have to say- I'm equally sh*te on any colour.

Scientifically proved, that is................

Well, looks like the testing is all coming up roses, so I'll probably run the upgrade pretty soon.  Unless something nasty pops up, I figure I'll run the upgrade and switch over on Jan 1st.

happy to help if I can :-)

Don't forget that archive.com keeps a backup copy of the old site anyway if we lose pages.

Not to worry, I don't think I've ever really lost a page... sometimes the links to them have changed, but the information is still all there.

I'll definitely migrate the left hand menu and all it's stuff.  Among other things, archive.com is likely to maintain a better backup for us if we actually keep the files online!

PS: I've added orange and shovelon as mods, too.  Feel free to bug me if you have any questions about how the extra commands work, guys.

I should probably get that setup in the new forum software as well, doesn't exactly make much sense to learn the mod commands for software that we are going to shut off in a couple days!

actually one thing i really like about this software is its really really easy to delete a whole page of bogus registerees....If you call up the members pages Dave you will see the far right column for most of us has information showing.Bogus members show no information.I have the members page showing and in another window i have the "view and delete members" page,I tick every member who has no information showing in he far right colum,so it takes about 10 seconds to delete 35 bogus members...

Ahh now theres a bike that will leave all those slow heavey blue ones behind!

With all that uber-heavy blue pigment removed, i bet your bike is now 20Kg lighter!
Unfortunately though, unless you paint it with the lighter than air red and yellow paint, your bike will still be a bit slower.

Andy.
