Title: I need some Pics
Post by: TheRo0sTer on August 23, 2007, 10:23:14 am
Ok my BEAST has the cone style rear shock mount. I have plans on changing it out. What I need is pictures of the mount on swing arms that mount the shock using an eye. Can anyone help me out?

What a lot of people did was make an adapter for an interface.Try looking at Junkster, FrankD3000.

Using those ideas, I welded/modified my strut to accept a standard shock. Still working very well.

Ha, ha, ha, I'm glad I'm not the only one that panicked when I saw that he's got his fork legs on back to front!

I've queried Terry on this in the past and apparantly it's intentional! <GRIN>

Cool, but shouldn't the eye mount so it can rotate up and down? I would think running it side to side would cause binding. I appreciate your help I was hoping someone would say to do exactly that. ;)

If the shock was to rotate up and down, there should be one more connection between the frame and the strut. The goal is to have zero degrees of freedom in the connection shock-strut.

While I was driving home from work I started to think about the shock rotating.

Thank you very much for the pic! Now I can mod that piece as soon as I have the shock in hand.

Just an FYI... I recently broke out my eye mounted rear shock on an 856.

It broke horizontally due to frame flex while pedalling hard - out of the saddle - uphill.

Terry has built his just right.

Ah yes, the fork.

The conventional direction coupled with the dreaded J-path drove me nuts. I swaped them around and found that I got a little more rake with it. Worked like a charm until I blew the smartshock.

I don't have a pic from the other side, but I may be able to get one up in a few days.

What I can tell you is that the shock is 7.5 inches i2i. The end goes right into the cone. I shaved off the rounded protusions from each side of the strut leaveing a small groove to match the width of the shock eye. In retrospect, I could have boxed in the shock end, but I don't notice any added flex to the rear.

Off for a long weekend.

Thanks Terry! I will be headed to my shop tonight to do some machining and welding so I can get my BEAST back on the road for tomorrow. ;)

I need to know if this MOD can be done with the mounting hole going horizontal? The NR2 shock I have won't fit unless the piggy back is mounted at the bottom not at the frame.

Well after much debate the NR2 shock just isn't going to cut it for the MOD so I am going to try and find a shock to replace it with. For now I made a collar and adjustment knob for the ODS. I have a 500lb spring on it, but it feels soft. At 230lbs I think I might need a little more. ;)

Anyone have a Noleen with cone mount to swap for my shock?

On my budget I can hardly afford to pay attention.
