Title: Circa 1973
Post by: Carbon_Angus on May 15, 2007, 09:52:25 am
This is how I rode back then....the ride was from Soquel, CA to San Jose, CA over the Santa Cruz Mtns via paved roads and gravel, dirt trails....avoiding the hiway. No helmets...jeans....tennis shoes a water bottle, windbreaker and squished sandwiches on the spring trap on the back. It was about a 30 mile ride. Can't remember the gearing back then but my bike was a UO8...Peugeot

Holy seventies dude!
"Breaking Away" were you?

OMG! Is that a Chevy Vega in the background?

Yeah. That was me too. 1973? I'd a' been 16 man! Fun times. Smoked alotta' w**d back then. Crashed that ol' Gitane 10spd a number of times.
Thanks for the memories dude!
Cheers.

That's ME! ("Circa 1973" that is...) I spent 9 months of that year in my mother's belly...

However, I did do a 1000 mile road ride up the Pacific coast on a 1973 Bottechia 10-speed when I was 17... Climbing all those hills with racing gears and 30 lbs of camping gear was no picnic. I was only about 110 lbs back then, but I'm pretty sure I gained about 10 more of leg muscle during those 10 days...

Ah the memories. Can't wait to create some new ones someday in the future.

1973, wow. the year I graduated from high school.
my dad had a vega, I learned to drive in it. He had an Impala SS convertible but sold it and bought the vega just before my brothers and I started driving. talk about a bummer! pretty smart on his part, tho., looking back on it.

the summer between 8th and 9th grade, my friend Paul and I rode our Peugeots (he had a UO8, I had just bought a PX 10 [still have it] with all the money I saved from my summer job [still spending all the money i have]) from Long Island to almost Vermont and back. only rained the last day of the trip and the only flat was that last day also. thank goodness for the old tubular tape. We stayed in youth hostels along the way and met a hot chick at the one at Bantam Lake, Conn. Wish I could remember her name. She was really nice.

I also remember that my legs were HUGE after that trip. Wish I could get them that way again. ah youth, would that our physical and mental peaks could occur at the same time, altho I fear that the peak of our mental prowess is right at the end. Uh, sorry.

anyway, in case you were wondering, we took the ferry from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport, Ct. kinda hard to ride a bike across the Throgs Neck Bridge. We lived about 40 miles from Port Jeff. I still ride my road bike out there daily during the summer. 80 mile round trip, and yes, I now live near where I grew up.

ok, thats my story that your 1973 pics inspired. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
