Well, sold the m/cycle and got the 957 built by my lbs. (Shameless plug: George Halls in Market Harborough near Leicester)
Got ti Hope hubs, ti tyed died spokes and sunset rims wheelset second hand on ebay but did the rest new. XTR rear mech and shifters, xt chainset, Avid single digit brakes with Avid levers. Thomson seatpost, Fizik Gobi saddle, Easton EA70 stem and mid-rise bars, Fire XC 1.8 tyres.
Went out this morning and it rides very nicely. Big grin.
Got some pics to put in this post but the insert image button is not working for me and can't copy and paste. Any ideas?
cheers

Second that Ade, I am dying to post some 856 frontal shots... From what I have read, Kiwi and others are having a difficulty with hackers (must be c-dale owners) messin with the site.
I am almost to terminal build myself:
"wife" ridden 856 with Risse Genesis on order, Hope XC/Syncros hoops with Conti Explorer Pro tires and Hope skewers, XT dual hydrolic disc front / mechanical rear shifter connected to 9.0 v's XT disc, 00 Marzocchi x fly Z1, FSA crank/BB/stem, Titec post/bar, crank bros pedals, Fizik Ti saddle, Cane Creek s6 headset, XT front mech/cassette, XTR Rear mech/chain
Once the Genesis is in. I should be GTG.
Thanks for letting me use your post to get that off of my chest....

If you have a url for the image (i.e. if it's already somewhere on the web), just type <img>your pic's url here</img> but use "[" brackets instead of "<" brackets...
Can't wait to see it.

Cheers for that - here goes then, got them on photobucket 'cos I've seen other people here do it that way.

It really rides very nicely and I only waited 10 years for one! Need to get used to riser bars as I've always ridden stretched out to flats before. Sorting out an order for a Risse Astro 5 for rear while the exchange rate works in my favour. Haven't weighed it yet, but feels lighter than my 657.

Beauty...

First off, It's March. Some of US have nothing but snow to look at. Please, photog your bike in gloomy/ snowy conditions, as it will please the lot of us. Thanks in advance. Very nice bike, I must say, but I'm sure if you took pics in gloomy weather it would be just ok. Don't mind me,I'll be cranky for another month or so. Thanks anyway................

That is gorgeous!!!!!:-)
It looks like it could be right off the showroom floor. I think you are really going to like the Risse on the back. I have air on the back of mine and it is magic. Not so good on the front.
Again, your 957 is a real head turner.

what pressure do you run in the risse Terry?
-
that 957 is a beauty(drooling) and seeing 07' XTR on a ten year old bike really makes me smile. GREAT JOB!
-
Is this better rightturncycle? To be fair it rained all the day before and all the day after, been riding upto axles in water in places.

Did look at trying to do proper retro, but buying second hand wearing parts at two/thirds new price didn't make sense. Not quite so showroom in flesh, some pitting under frame and decal peel. Still lovely mind.
Shovelon - thought you had the genesis on the front sorted, is it still not so good? Was wondering about going that route but remembered someone had some issues getting it set up. Was it you that had to keep sending it back?
cheers

got to agree with terry, thats gorgeous! not enough carbon though lol (my smileys dont work)

If you could photoshop about 3 feet of snow all around, you'd be spot on!. Today we have 40 mph winds blowin snow all over. Blizzard like and frigid for sure. Days like these I think I'll never see the trails...
:(
Once gain though, Beautiful bike!!

what pressure do you run in the risse Terry?
100 psi on the front( risse genesis. Lots of stiction with tight bushes. Might have it broken-in in about 10 years.:-)

that is one beauty of a bike.
wow!

Thanks for nice comments about bike.
I have a question about the front shock. There is a knurled adjuster at the bottom that I assume adjusts rebound. To save hours of fiddling and trying to discern a difference in riding can anyone tell me which way is max/min and if it actually makes much difference. I've got it about middle for now and it seems ok.

In my experience it hardly makes any difference either way!!

Ha!!!:-)
Well from my experience, using righty-tighty, rotating towards spring increases rebound damping. Rotating out lessens rebound damping.

I know what you mean, on the bench, with the spring taken off, the shocks definitely rebound quicker, slower, (or not at all!) depending on the adjustment.
In place on the bike and being used in anger, I've found the difference is very slight.
I think it's also affected by how well matched a spring you have versus your weight and riding style/conditions as well.
But ain't it nice to have something to twiddle with and your mates ask: "what'cha doin'?" and you say "Oh, I'm just adjusting the rebound as I felt it was a trifle overdamped on that last run............."
...............BS in full flow........as an explanation for why you went A over T !!! <grin>

Only just seen this thread, beautiful 957 in the Uk... I'm afraid mine looks much worse cosmetically, all decals removed, but it's still doing me proud 10 years down the line, getting some top 10s in UK enduro events (managed 7th in the plymouth night rider 12 hour night event despite a whole lap off, at 3am, sat in the toilet with dodgy guts!). Mines pretty much a mix of old frame/new bits too - fox forx, king wheels/headset, carbon bars etc but nearly all has been bought second hand and as I've had 10 years worth of riding out of a £700 new frame I reckon £70 per year is pretty good value!

It looks fantastic mate. Makes me want hurry with my 96 animal. Getting hold of bits slowly. Any tips for retro rebuild would be handy. Struggling to find Sram SRT 800 xrays, missed a set on e-bay a month ago noy seen any since.

The only second hand parts put onto the frame were the wheels and the saddle. Rest all new. Sold motorcycle and put cash into this. Looked at prices 2nd hand bits go for and decided that there weren't many bargains to be had, might as well get new. Put Risse front and rear since photos and rides very well.
So best advice I can offer on a retro build is to send you to http://www.retrobike.co.uk/ who like to keep things period and have a good auction watch facility. Also http://www.bikepro.com/directions/a97_proflex/957.html
where there is complete original spec and some photos.
Oh yeah - run thin tyres. There's hardly any mud clearance for UK and I originally put on 2.1 Fire xc but had to carry it too often. So I run 1.5 Continentals in winter and currently 1.8 Fire xc for summer.

Thanx mate.
Got hold of some 221's new your right what your saying not cheap second hand bits. I've been out of MTB's for awhile used to have 857 then brought an animal, looked around at things in mag's, seems really expensive and not as nice. So when my local dealer came up with the animal frame about 4 months ago could not resist. Could not belive it when a set of vector 2's came up on e-bay with ODS on them. Paid more than I'd like but not many about.
Thanx again for web sites, can not wait to bang it down smithscombe and wycombe up at the quantocks N Somerset.

smithscombe and wycombe up at the quantocks N Somerset.
oh yes! :-)
-
Are there a few of us local(ish) to the quantocks then? We should have a meet...
Ade - was puzzled by your "use 1.5" conti tyres" quote, then I realised that you've got V's on, and the positioning that close to the 'chainstay' does indeed provide clogging and carrying opportunities. That's why mine has discs front n rear - not period, but got me through some monster mud bogs at the recent CLIC24 event with no pushing/carrying required! I remember doing a race about 6 years ago when I had to walk for 3/4 of each lap the clogging was so bad - couldn't even push the bike and was using the granny ring on DH's there was so much resistance!

I know this is a popular question, but how did you do the disc fitting?
I may consider that route as I just did a 5 hour trailquest in the chilterns, it rained (lots) and it was like riding up and down rivers. Wore out the pads in the first hour and spent the next 4 deliberately riding into mud, leaves rocks etc. to slow down.
rapiddescent don't have any rear adaptors at the moment and aren't planning anymore.
There are 2 threaded holes on the nondriveside drop out - I don't suppose they take some sort of disc adaptor.

brilliant, thanks orange.
looks like plan would be to get the wheel, rotor and caliper and then take measurements to fabricate the plate. Probably revisit this in the run up to current rim wearing out.

Saw this rear brake adaptor on ebay today. Haven't bought one so not a recommendation. Might be worth a look if want to go disc without home manufacture.
