Title: 856 MCU Replacements

Hi all,

I know this is probably the most asked question on a tech forum, but what alternatives do I have when it comes to replacing my knackered elastomers on my beloved 856. Is it possible to purchase the original MCU's? If so, where?

Comments are greatly appreciated.

hey Lewis,welcome to the club!
The 856 is a good bike and easy to upgrade
Right at this moment you have three options
1)The 856 uses a simple damper that can accept a spring upgrade.I think Callum (http://www.rapiddescentscotland.co.uk/) has a kit.
2)There is a guy in The UK  (http://idriders.com/cgi-bin/YaBB_K2/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1155208581) selling shocks,one of which will fit your bike
3)You can buy elastomers from  Iron Horse. (http://idriders.com/cgi-bin/YaBB_K2/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1137856872)

As I have mentioned elsewhere I bought Callum's kit and found it to be great. Good luck.

I have also bought stuff from Bob_W so can vouch for both!! :-)

Thanks for the advice Kiwi/Orange. I have emailed Callum for some prices and how to order. Didn't realise that Iron Horse had connections with Pro Flex. My LBS Buckingham Bikes is a dealer for Iron Horse so I will ask them if they can help.

Think I would prefer the spring conversion but I'm a little worried that the bike may be too hard. What do others think out there?????? Any idea on prices, and are they easy to fit?

Spring kit is around £30 for the rear, I think Callum sends a medium rated spring as standard. I never fitted mine to an 856 but did to my 857 and it was just right for my 13st frame!

I did need to change the oil in the ODS to a lighter weight though can't remember if I ended up with 10wt or 20wt - I tried both! It's cheap enough to experiment with though at around £4 for a large bottle.

£30 sounds ok. I assume that I can purchase a front unit aswell as the rear. The rear MCU (bottom section) compresses nearly flat while the fronts seem to be fine. Thought it would be best to change each unit at the same time.

PS - I wanted to post a picture of the 856, but unfortunately I can't get the system to work!!!

I just read that Jcat just got elastomers from K2 for FREEEEEEEE!!!!

You might try them. You might want to contact Iron horse directly.

I may call them myself and try to score some.

MCU's will run ya $15 each. I called last week to get a set for my 755 and 856. It's been stated elsewhere they don't have any rears that would be strong enough to hold anyone above 120#s.
