Title: Need Rear Skewer help
Post by: KenP on July 30, 2006, 09:30:05 am
Hi everyone,
I need some help with my 1999 K2 evo with disk brake adapter installed on the rear swing arm.  A while back I posted a thread where my rear derailuer was shifting like mad and it ended up being the standard quick release skewer was just not tight enough.  So I switched over to one of the 5mm locking types and everything has been working.  But the problem I have is that the threads on the skewer are only about 5mm into the axle nut, I would like to have more then the 5mm in the axle nut.  But every locking skewer I find seems to only support 135mm (except Pitlock which is $49).

With the brake adapter on I need at least 150mm support for a rear hub with with the hub, swing arm and brake adapter added in.  So does anyone have any suggestions on a skewer I can get?  Hopefully for a reasonable about of cash.

I just use the standard 5mm allen types with HammerHead disk brake adapters - they usually fit OK.  I don't user the Ti ones anymore because when they get dirty they become extremely difficult to remove.

I had a similar problem with my Planet X.  The the adjustible dropouts were too thick to accomodate a normal skewer.  When I did a search at MTBR the Planet X owners were recommending getting a Planet X skewer which is on the long side or a Salsa (expensive).  I went to a bike shop near my house and look through there spart parts bin.  They had a Rolf skewer that was long enough.  They wanted $20 for it.  I decided I rather buy a new Salsa from my favorite LBS for that price.  Went to my favorite LBS and they had a Salsa in their spare parts bin.  The owner just gave it to me.  I guess that's why they're my favorite LBS.

Planet X, Rolf & Salsa is what I found that would work.
