Title: EVO rear shock size option question
Post by: dan_irby on February 10, 2003, 12:36:57 pm
I read alot of informative comments about rear shock options for the EVO frames. So could someone comment on this question:

What modifications are required to fit a fox 8.5 eye-to-eye shock on a medium EVO ?  I've heard people needing to get smaller wheels (24 inch) and having to file the shock mounts...neither of which I would care to do. I'm sort of in the market for a new shock and am starting to pay attention to the chatter on this issue. Thanks for the input.

8.5 fox RC is gunna require some mods...

if your not "feeling" it, then i suggest you look elsewhere...

in reality the mods are super simple, but it does require a certain mind set..to "mod" a perfectly good frame...

there are some other brands u can try that'll bolt right up...maybe thats what u should be looking at...

???

If the EVO has the same dimensions as my 5500c, (I think it does) just go for the 7 7/8".  It will slacken the ride angle a little, but the ride is phenomenal!!!

I too didn't want to file anything on my frame or change anything, although I have a Hammerhead on the way!!!  So I went with a Vanilla RC and love it.

I didn't want to change ANYTHING when I upgraded my rear shock in my disco monkey, so I went for the vanilla R, I love it and is a great balance for the psylo, (6" rear-5"front) and since I didn't filed it, change wheel size, or streched the frame (I machined to a perfect fit) the frame is still 'new' so whenever I feel ready to it I'll go for a shiver SC + vanillaRC :P :o

How did you machined it, how much did it cost and what is part number of the shock you used? If you have the measurment or blueprint of the bushings you machined please share with us.

Thank You,

Vitaliy.
Title: Consider a Stratos ....

Same i2i as your original shock and it works great.  I got a Helix Expert, used, with a med. Disco Monkey frame on Ebay.  I transfered it over to my K2 5000 with no problem.  Has more travel than the original Smart shock and way superior quality of travel.

Here's a store that sells Stratos at good prices.

I recall reading that with a Fox RC on a medium frame you'll have to run a 24" tire due to interference with the piggy back chamber when the suspension compresses.

Vitaliy,

Just measure the size of the original bushing and cut/machine the fox ones to the same overall width.I used a hacksaw first then a grinder that a friend has to finish. My only problem was that the bolt size was different ie the original evo bolt is 6mm, my van r came with a 8mm so I had to make a shim from a plastic papermate pen! Works great but my intention is to get the correct size bushings which I expect can be got from fox {via lbs?}. Due to my lack of lbs I will probably order from BETD in the UK, who have a variety of bushings and will also make custom sizes I believe. They also make hangers for K2/Proflex.
