hmmm, maybe he should have been ridding faster than he was  :P

Come to Oz... no bears hiding behind trees in the woods ready to tackle unsuspecting cyclists over here! [smiley=laughing.gif]

Cheers, Lee

Yet another good reason to carry a gun while cycling... (not that you need a reason) ;D

Or at least a good reason not to mountain bike alone.

4 years ago,  a pit bull chased me down and chomped my rear tire. It took off afterward but left me with a flat. True it is not the same.

I don't believe the newscast mentioned what type of bear it was. Well , besides a hungry one...

Seen three bears myself in past few years, biggest we agreed at about 600 pounds (Tahoe Meadows)....They've all just ignored us, so far...Cal. black bears....,mtn lions, wierdo redneck desert rat dwelling gun toting people, high desert meth labs,( cops finally busted it, then another sprang back up a month later)....oh yeah, finally actually happened last friday, as many rattlesnakes I've seen and ridden past, finally ran over one, he did'nt move until I went back up the hill to check if it was dead, turned out he was'nt; raised his head to look around,...thats when  I split !!!
Also seen naked Californians (I'm guessing) roaming around the mountians...crazies  !!
Still have'nt been attacked by anything or anyone...yet....

Sheesh. You were lucky. The last time I stumbled upon a group of naked Californians (about 200 of 'em), they were ALL male. Good thing I saw them from a good distance...

Californians, in general (no offense OP), are scarier than ANY wild animal you might encounter in the woods! :o

Even tho' I live here, I'd have to agree with you guys about Californians - any state that would have a
'Gipper', 'Governator' and 'Boxer' (Barbara) leading the team - well, I'm still looking to get out too.

Oh, I was attacked by a rabbit not long back.  I was scooting along a fairly fast piece of single track and a short ear'd bunny jumped out onto the trail with nostrils flaring and fangs glistening in the sun.  Surely aiming to take a hunk of meat out of my leg, he headlonged into the back side of my fork, slowed and stopped my front wheel.  I was simultaneously 'dismounted' and grounded.  I did manage to right myself, get back on the bike quickly before his pack of friends could decend on me.  The bunny did not make it out alive and I've been on the lookout whenever I go past that point in my travels since.

All the more reason to carry a weapon of choice when mountain biking -
I prefer one of my bows, carbon arrows and some razor sharp broadheads.

Lotta strange things going on here in California - gotta protect yourself.
OP

crikey.  here in scotland I go out armed with a 20 pound note to buy a few pints at the pub afterwards.  We're not allowed guns or anything - in fact, even a kitchen knife outfoors would probably get one into a lot of trouble.

Poor bear... he's just sore at us for riding all those Beasts and Animals through his living room!
nyuk nyuk...

Sure hope we don't end up too crowded or politically controlled to play with guns here in Texas. The old Bill of Rights sure is getting mixed up. Can't even ride my bike in most national parks! (The ones I pay for.)

In my surfing days I would go to a spot that you had climb down a cliff to get to.  It use to be an unofficial nude bathing spot because of the isolation.  Problem was I use to wear glasses back then.  I always left my glasses in the car.  I use to hate it when my surfing buddy say "wow checkout that one".

WOW !!!  What a colorful thread this turned in to !!
The day after I last wrote, I was o the trail and had 3 quite large and well fed looking coyotes cross my path about 30 feet in front of me. Good thing I left my mutt at home for this ride. Then 5 minutes later saw a good size buck. It recently rained here, so the critters came down from the upper elevations to check out the greenery....wonder what I'll see next !!! ;D

Here in Bavaria we have actually the first bear for 170 years.
Of course the bear is catching some sheep and things.
So, the farmers are in a uproar and the government just gave the announcement today, that the bear can be hunted.

Poor Bavaria!

It's just one bear for a huge country and they try to kill him.
Damned!

I have managed to windsurf in lots of cool places over the years and have met a few surprises in the water.

Of course, the first time a pod of dolphins swims by with their dorsal fins up, that's a real  [smiley=diaper.gif] kind of experience.

Late one October afternoon (1985) I was windsurfing some tidal rips near Portland, Maine when I had to take a breather. Sitting on the board drifting and worrying about the cold water, setting sun, and the distance to the beach I just about had a heart attack when a large dark head popped up 3 feet away and barked at me! It was a harbor seal wanting to play, but under the circumstances it might as well have been JAWS. I'm pretty sure my drysuit got wet on the inside... :-[

Then there was the time in Guantanamo in '86... I sailed "over the line" and had the commies and the US Navy both coming after me! Made the harbor seal look downright inviting... :o

Love running across deer and coyotes on the bike. It's the feral hogs that have me worried.

I quite often come across our local police doing the rounds off road (looking for fly tippers)on their mountain bikes, some pretty wretched looking Specialised bikes. they may not be any sort of animal but they make some pretty fierce noises when I rip their legs off on the hills or flats. [smiley=laughing.gif]
We`ve spoken occasionally when I`ve stopped or were passing in opposite directions, and they seem well intrigued with the Proflex.
Other than that, these new fangled European horse flys that seem to bite me all summer is about as exciting as it gets, of course Mrs Tel says if I rode fast enough I would`nt get bitten. [smiley=turtle.gif]
Cheers, Tel [smiley=beer.gif]

P.S. fly tippers are illegal rubbish dumpers, not people who flip insects over! [smiley=disbelief.gif]

Funny, That I hear so many stories but have yet to see a bear. So much for living in bear country. I've been on te Sunshine Coast (On the Fraser River) for 3 months now.
