Title: Rear replacement shock for Proflex 857
Post by: Lee Robson on April 19, 2006, 06:25:46 pm
Hi all,

I've been reading though the posts on this forum to work out what options I have in replacing a dead rear Nolean shock on my Proflex 857.

So far a Risse astro-5 or genesis appear to be the only contenders, or are there any others that I have missed?  Just want to keep my options open as I may have to purchase from the USA.

Cheers, Lee

If you can get hold of an old ODS unit ideally with a coil spring you'll have something halfway decent to keep you going. There's usually somebody here who has one lying around.

Stupid question time but is ODS a brandname or acronymn?

Sorry - Oil Damping System. Girvin's proprietary shock which originally came with yellow elastomers (which usually dried up after a few years to rock solid), but for which you can now get spring replacements (www.rapiddescentscotland.co.uk).

Risse is a US co. Stratos is also, bit I think they discontinued the strut mount option Helix.

The Risse Genisis Air shock is a wonder. Good price, and LIGHT.

Risse makes the only replacement shock for xlinks as well. I just bought one myself. Have have sent it back for a "softening". Came back and can't wait to mount it.

Hi Terry,

Please let me know how the Risse Genisis shock works on your profelx!  I am considering ordering either Genesis or the Astro-5 but am not sure if I really want to fork out and extra US$100 for damping control on hteastro 5!  Especially considering I won't be able to really send it back to the manufacturer (I live in Aust.) for any post-sales adjustments that may be needed.

Cheers, Lee

Lee,

The Genesis that I bought had to be sent back to Risse to soften the damping. It is the only model they have to fit my crosslink. So the Astro 5 may be an altenative worth consideration.

I have the shock back but they forgot so send back the bushings. When I get them I will try it and give you a report.

Hello:
I had the same problem with my 856.There are not many options but there are a few. My favourite one is the stratos helix expert option. The manufactor also can make you a special adaptor to the rear shock wick will fit on your bike.If you are willing to do so prepare to spend at least 300€.
As other suggested you might considerer the risse solution or maybe you can find an ods rear shock someore in this forum comunity, as I did.
Good luck for your quest.

I'm having the shop here at work machine me up an aluminum adapter to fit a fox shock that came off of an Amp Research bike.  the top eyelet should bolt right in with a little clearance issue for the schrader valve.

Adapters are magic. Frankd3000 made one to fit a cloud nine onto a crosslink.

I modified my 957 strut to accept an air swinger. Ohhh, so smooth.

Hmmm, so I emailed Risse on 21st Apr 06 asking whether they ship their shocks internationally, or if they have a distributor here in Oz and I'm still waiting to hear back from them! [smiley=yawn.gif]

Maybe they don't want to sell me their product?  [smiley=disbelief.gif]  I'll send them another email but I must say this is a bad sign to start with as if I have a question/problem regarding their shock(s) in the future are they just going to ignore me then.  :o

I just parted out my 855. I have 2 Risse shocks that are barely used.

I have the Genisis that was on my Girvin fork and the Astro 5 that was on the rear.

I am going to put these on ebay, but haven't had the time to get pics and refresh my memory on the specs for these pieces.

Let me know if you are interested. I'll give you a good deal on both of them. As I can't use them any more.

Or if any one else is interested let me know.

It cost me 285.00 shipped. It does not have a scratch on it.

How about 200.00 shipped via USPS priority mail?

You can use paypal if you split the fee with me.

You can check my feed back on Ebay under the username 1banger.

I also have the pump for 15.00 if you are interested.

Thanks!

Thought I should ask before purchasing... will both of the above mentioned shocks fit/attach to my Proflex 857 (i.e. remove Noleen coil/oil shocks and attach the Risse) or do I need any special parts to attach the Risse?

Cheers, Lee

Oracle,

I'm not sure of the fitmit between the 855 and 857. I guess you could email Risse and ask them if it is a direct fit or if you need an adapter.

They wont fit without a special adapter guy's here on the forum sell them, The 855 was an odd year as far as the rear strut goes~ so one for an 855 wont directly fit an 856,x57.x58

Thanks for the update seanzzo. Do you know the names of the guys who sell the adapter?

Thanks.

I think the freedom adapter for the x56  by risse will let the 855 shock fit the 857

Sean, just got back from the post office. Your shock and pump shipped via USPS Priority mail.

You should have it within 2 to 3 days.

Enjoy!

BTW: I still have a Risse Genisis shock available if anyone is interested.

Hi Lee,

Apparently they don't do Emails. Anyway, I have to call them for some more work on my Genisis. It is more responsive than before, but I just want it a little more comliant.

I have found that I need to leave a message in the service department. They are pretty good at returning my calls.

I will ask them about an Oz distributer.

I checked with Risse on any other distributers. They don't have any distributers in either Uk or Aus.

I did get an R.A. # right away from Robert at Risse.
They seem to want to keep working on my Genisis to suit my comfort. That is nice.

Yeah, I'll have to dig around my garage files to see if I can find it.

Mean while I'm going to call Risse and see if they have a pdf for this shock.

Barry.

Found all of the paper work for the shocks.

I'm making a copy to give to the person who buys the Genisis.

I'll get this in the mail to you on Monday morning.

risses web site has some good info, and i agree about there email,i have twice tried to get the low down on the difference between the x56 shock which requires the freedom adapter and the x57 shock which actually has the tapered end,so for my moey the x57 shock should bolt up the the x56....bu t have never found out id f this is actually the case!

This may sound stupid, but doesn't the Risse shock come with the same double eyelet setup most shocks do?  I have an 856, and I can't figure out the bottom of the Risse (or any other newer rear shock) will fit into the swingarm.
Thanks,
-Thom

Risse makes rear shocks that have the tapered end that will fit your 857.

What you have to watch for is any small size x57 that has the skinny end in the frame. There just is'nt any room for anything other than the nospleen or ods shock.

Otherwise you could use a shorter aftermarket shock and fab up an adapter like many of us have done.

Hmmm, now I'm a little confused!

Do Risse make an adapter that attach to any of their genesis/astro shocks that will enable these to be connected to our pro-flex 857's; or do we have to buy a specifically made (pro-flex 857 rear) shock from them?

To clarrify  are the genesis/astro shocks all the same (i.e. same length/stroke/shaft) but simply come with differnt end adapters that attach to the shaft, or is the shaft made specific for each model of pro-flex?

Why can't Risse simply reply to an email?  [smiley=worry.gif]

Risse makes a special shock for Proflex. It fits right on the strut with no mods.

Same with the crosslink.

the risse is built to fit the world cup strut in three different verions but all have a threaded end to accept the bolt from the strut. The x55 version has a flat end to go onto the flat x55 strut. The x56 is  the same shock i think but need s the freedom plate adapter to overcome the lack of a flat end to the strut, and the x57 shock has a tapered end just like the noleens.

:oWell I bought the astro-5 having an 855 but in removing the old 1 to install the astro I see that the previous owner has changed the strut to the tapered cone type I believe found on the x57 "correct me if I'm wrong" now saying all that what can I do to use what I have [smiley=diaper.gif]

Seanzo,

Wow, what a calamity!

Call Risse and explain what happened. I think that you may be able to swap it. Unless someone has the old style strut which they may want to swap with you, that may be your only hope.

Can you post a picture of your old shock end?
