Title: Spring rate/length for rear ODS

Hi

I'm looking for an after-market spring for my rear ODS on my 97 Beast and just need to know what to look out for on Ebay.

I know Rapiddescent do them (I bought one for my Vectors) but I was hoping just to find a cheapo 2nd hand spring and re-use the end-cups.

Can anyone tell me what I need in terms of rating/length?

Or if anyone has one going cheap I'd like to buy.

BTW I am about 80kgs (13 st) and ride mainly XC if that makes any difference.

you didn't say that in your email!!  I've got a box of old K2 springs as well.  want one?

I've got a 97 beast in the cellar so I can find the spring dimensions. I'll check to see if the cor springs awill fit.

Thanks for this - when I say 're-use the end-cups', I mean the original plastic (are they plastic? Isn't the gold top one alloy?) ones not your nice machined ones! So would any of the old K2 springs you have been any use? They sound like the best bet, else I might try one of your new springs and risk that the end-cups hold out.

i think you will find the k2 springs will be to long.The original speed spring conversion had a top hat shaped retainer which came down over the preload adjuster to allow for the extra length over the mcu springs

just had a thought.  I think orange's bike might be a 96 beast (perhaps sold in 1997) because the 97 beast had a NR-2 shock...

The 96 had ODS.  The CORMR comes out at 340 lbs/inch for the first inch of travel.  That's as close as I could get to the MCU's.

The key reason for the end caps that I make is that they align the spring centrally on the shock with a wee rim around the edge.  The top collar is like a top hat - not unlike the speedpro one, but mine is a little deeper to provide more material in the collar part.  I don't think a spring would sit centrally on the black (light alloy!) spacers for the MCU's.

Strongly recommed Callum's "top hat" adapter... I got one via Simon (or maybe Simon made it...) In any case, it's a very neat fit and adds stability to a strut design that, well... just isn't made anymore.

Junkster & I both achieved the same result using a 1.125" headset cup. It works, but it's, well... junky.

Very nice upgrade for my 856.

Also, having experimented with lots of springs, I'll bet 340# would be just about right for 13 stone. Should be pretty plush.

Yes that top hat is actually the old mountain pro
speed spring adaptor,Callum's adaptor will do the
job just the same.

funnily enough.  I weight 13 stone.  coincidence?  I might change the top hat a bit in the next batch to allow a new spring design I'm thinking of selling - although, it's probbaly only me that gets excited about spring rates!
