hi ,
i posted a previous topic regarding suspension on my cross breed proflex, ( pics in gallery.)
simon and martin73 kindly gave me some answers and ideas.
can anybody advise through there experience wether im better off with original girvins if there revampted or are standard aftermarket shocks better ?
what im after is advise on what would work best and ride best on the bike if both types of fork were available ??
thanx

you can buy crosslinks quite cheaply but as much as it pains me to say it a modern pair of telescoics are prolly your best bet,if for no other reason than you will get disc mounts. You dont need more than 100 mm travel on these bikes.
these (http://www.ediscountbike.com/) guys normally have crosslinks for cheap...

thanks kiwi
i took a look at that site and your right there cheap.
crosslinks are $99.
the only thing is there 1 1/8 " stem.
im sure mine is 1"
can i fit 1 1/8" and change the head set to this frame
or am i just wishfull thinking?????

Hi Northern,
I am almost totaly sure your frame can use a 1 1/8 headset. Even the 856 uses 1 1/8 Can you unscrew the topcap and measure the steerer tube?

AGAIN YES
You have as standard a 1 1/8" headset
the steerer maybe 1" but has adaptors to allow it
to run on a 1 1/8" headset so there's nothing stopping you getting a new fork,
and your far better off getting a good modern
telescopic fork.
Oh and if you do go for the crosslink make sure you
get the correct one for your headtube height.

I've never seen one of these adapters - I've got 2 sets of Girvin forks both 1" steerers (admittedly second hand!) but neither came with one - what should it look like and where can I get one from??

Look on the bottom of the steerer tube you should have a pressed on collor,
if memory serves me right there is a split top hat
collor for the top, infact I know there is cos I've got one in my hand now [smiley=laughing.gif]

nope haven't got that. Had to get headset reducers for one frame and bodge the other... where can I get them do you know? Are they unique to these steerers or is it a generic item I could get at my LBS?

Watch the listings. They usually start bidding at $50. ;)

they are a generic item, they are just a set of races that sorta sit in the 1 and 1/8 races to bring it down to 1 in
