Title: V-Brake Recommendations

I'm using a rear v-brake scavenged off a Mongoose as the front brake on my cross-link-equipped 5000.  I rode a 4.3 mile trail today (half up/half down) with 1300 ft. elevation change and realize that I need to get a real front brake!   [smiley=diaper.gif]

What do you use?  What do you like in the middle price range?

i have some used Avid magnesium brakes on my 857 that do the job real well...not parting with them though!

I use XTR V brakes, and have found them as good as my mates discs. But LX, XT and XTR Shimano V-brakes use the same V-brake system and I reckon work much better than other makes.Cheap too for LX.

My wife has Avid Arch Rival 40's that are fantastic stoppers. I've never used a better V-brake. Noticeably smoother than my old XT V's were. Plus they look kind of cool.

I've also got some low-end Avids on my single speed (and I had similar ones on my old hardtail). They seem to work just about as well as the high end ones, but since they don't have a fancy "parallel push" design, you might have to adjust the pads occasionally to keep the wear even. I don't, and the pads wear a little unevenly, but they last more than long enough for me (I very rarely fully wear out a set of brake pads for rim brakes).

 as is my wont, I would recommend the v-brakes I have on my Oz: Precision Billet!!

not only  are they cool looking (anodized blue), but they stop amazingly well. unfortunately, they have not been made for a few years and are probably hard to find.

more realistically, shimaNO's work pretty well (they came on my original tre mtb), alos tektro brakes work well (I used em on my old Mongoose hardtail. I think I have the tektros (brakes and levers ) around somewhere. make me an offer (cheap). I'lll let you know if i can find 'em.

hey there.  i'm using xtrs with avid levers (those black ops ones) and i don't see the need for disks.

I have the Avid Magnesium brakes too and they are great. I needed to put a cheap set on another bike and opted for Shimano Deores and they work great t o, although they weigh alot.

Avid would be my choice in future buys though. Like the Avid speedial Ti.
