Title: Rear Derailler Skipping
Post by: jinder on May 02, 2005, 12:54:52 am
Hi Guys..

While in very low gears (small ring on front and big rings on rear - gears 6 to 8) and when I climb up steep hills and my rear derailler skips gears.  It won't lock on to gear 7 or 8, just pops in and out while I am climbing up the hill?

Do I need a new Rear Derailler or can it be adjusted?  It is a old derailler...  by the way I got a new cable 2 months ago...

Thanks!

Hmmmmmm
If I'm reading this correct its skipping in
small ring front and gears 6 7 8 on the rear ???
if so these are the small gears on the cassette and
should not be used in conjunction with the small
front ring as an excessive angle is placed upon the
chain,
however if your meaning small ring front and large
gears rear eg 1 2 and 3 then first I'd check the deraillier hanger is straight and the deraillier is
hanging straight down,
then I'd check the cable indexing and the deraillier low stop adjuster,
usually I've found when this starts to happen
its time for a new chain and cassette,
I really suspect thats the route of your problem,
I've riden many times with a complety worn out
rear deraillier (even one with a nail as a substitute pivot pin) yet they've never skipped, just eventually
fallen apart.

Maybe you just need to increase the tension of the chain by turning the tension screw on the derailleur.
But like Simon said, most of the times this problem means you have to buy some new stuff.

Worn out/stretched chain, knackered cassette......possibly.....
Also worth checking the jockey wheels are OK.....
But if it's "crossing chain" syndrome i.e. small cog on front, small cogs on back then 'nuf said that'll do it every time!
