Now that I have a full functional rear shock I am thinking of putting on a new fork with a little more travle and one that can accomidate disc brakes (custom fab isn't my thing). Do I need anything special? Or will just about any fork fit?

You have no worries,most forks will fit,the 856 accomodates 1 1/8" steerer tubes,the choice is yours,
I would tend not the go more than 100mm travel,though upto 125mm may be ok.

Just out of curiosity, why not any more travel then 100-125mm?
Sorry if this is a newb question but I would like to gain as much knowledge as possile.

::)the main thing is that the 856 is a classic xc bike and more than 4" may tempt the rider to go places and do things that the frame was never designed to do. also you want to balance the front with close to the same as the rear. there have been some that have used the world cup frames for more than xc applications but not many.

I used a 100mm fork with disk brakes on my 856 for a while. It works rather well. I also would suggest not to go too crazy with front travel because it will ruin the geometry of the bike. 100mm Marzocchis and a coil spring ODS shock worked beautifully.

I was thinking maybe the Fox Vanilla R130 and adjusting the travle down a bit...i hear that thing is pretty sweet and not to bad in the weight department.
What is the rear wheel travel on an 856?

The rear wheel travel is about 3" with an ODS and spring. I would advice against spending a lot of money on a shock just for the moment because then you start getting into the territory of getting a whole new frame of eBay.
I'd go for a ODS spring kit if I were you.
