Title: 856 Rear Shock - wanted
Post by: jinder on January 29, 2005, 11:32:04 am
Hi Guys...

My friend got his 856 frame and he is in need of a replacement rear shock.  We were wondering what size is the shock and what are the replacement "coil over oil" manufactures avaible for the bike?  Pics would be awesome too...  thanks gang...

Here is our project machine... (PHOTO DAY 1) but wait until you see the end result in a few weeks  ...  you guys are going to LOVE it!

you can measure the ods unit,i think they are 210 mm eye to cone.Risse and stratos do bolt up replacemants,or you could swap a noleen if you know someone with a rideable 957(watch out)The other alternatives are the adapters that many have made to fox's etc.the other track is to refurbish the ods unit and fit a spring to it.

Cool, thanks Kiwi...

You mentioned refurbish the ods unit and fit a spring to it...how would we go about doing that?  That sounds very interesting indeed!

ods oil change (http://idriders.com/proflex/resources/ods_service.pdf)

You will need to make a top hat type adapter as the required spring is longer than the mcu's,speedspring you to do a speedpro conversion but they hve discontinued it.I guess you could use the spring off your 957 to see how a spring could fit on,but you may need a larger diameter to clear the ods unit and preload ring, which by the way would be partially covered by the new spring adapter

From the photo I can assume that its going to be built up for some heavy duty work ???
Noticed an extra gusset welded on the down tube at head tube area (open ended I hope),dont recall this on the 856 (mine didn't unless it came in at a later date),
the spring conversion is relatively simple on the ODS shock, the early ODS units where well over damped with 30wt oil, there was an upgrade posted to switch to a lighter oil for use with the elastomers (as they have inherent damping qualities of there own),if you do go to a spring you will be better off with the 30wt oil or the unit will be under damped using the spring, found this out when I did a similar conversion.

Thanks Simon!

(Some 856 had the extra welded piece...some didn't - not sure why though - maybe frame size related?)
