mine I think....may be a stinky six, not too big not too wimpy, to go all around, with a junior T or a shiver SC, vanilla rc, and race face turbine cranks, of couse XTs comps, ryno lites XL not sure about tires, but since here is super dry, mutano 2.4 rear+weirwolf 2.5 front............ ::) ;D
-
no question its a fully polished 03 FOES fly with the Curnutt shock...
and has grimeca system 20IBS brakes on a protoype 04 MAnitou 7" slider Dc fork...
shifting is SRAM, X.O of course spinning on 26/24" Intense MAg30's... michelin 2.8's frt and back... since im dreamnig here im also dreaming michelin actually makes a 24" tire... ;D
cockpit and drivetrain by Easton/Raceface...
i think that about covers my wishlist...
anyone got a few dollars to put towards making my dream happen ? ;)

Karpiel Army (All White) w/ Avy rear shock
Monster T
Arrow DHX 36h Rims 26f x 26r(DH)/24r(FR)
w/ Sun Ringle Hubs
Maxxis Mobster2.7(f) x Highroller(r) 2.7 (26 &24)
Hayes 8" Brakes F&R
RaceFace Cockpit (Diabolus Stem 50mm & Riser bar)
Hopey
Hurricane Seatpost
ODI Lock-on Grips
SDG Grand Prix seat
Shimano Deore LX 8sp Shifters w/ indictors removed
8sp Cassette (11-32)
SRAM PC-99 chain
DK Iron Cross Mag pedals
But in reality I'd settle for a Spec. Big Hit DH.
-
I won't spec. it out like you guys, but start w/ a Santa Cruz Bullit and I'd be happy. I've got 50% of the $ saved for the frame...really struggling between Bullit and Heckler...I still wanna be able to chug up the mtn. and really want to enjoy myself on the way down.
Any thoughts/opinions?
-
There is a fully built Specialized Enduro at the lbs for around $1,200 US...is this a good deal. I've never shopped Specialized before.
-
Specialized really do seem to have FS dialled in with the two choices:- Epic & Enduro. They have teamed up with FOX and have this 'Itch Switch' on the air shock which can only be had on a Specialized OEM bike/frame (allegedly available aftermarket next year).
Has anybody had an affair with these bikes (one off fling LBS test ride)? Reviews on mtbr.com seem very favourable.
But the Oz gets 99% fab reviews on mtbr.com! Go look at the 5500c, & Oz M.

2003 Jekyll with Lefty Max. I don't think it gets any better than that for an all around trail bike. 5+ inches of suspension, but still a really light bike. And that new Lefty is awesome. I thought the old Lefty was the best fork ever, but they added an inch and got rid of its only "flaw" (according to some people) by licensing Manitou's TPC+ damping. Definitely too proprietary, but hey, we're talking dream bike here. If I could afford a new Jekyll, I wouldn't worry about the cost! (Someday...)
I was just watching Chausson and Gracia doing huge dirt jumps on Jekylls (the older 4 inch version) in New World Disorder 2. What a sweet video!
Here's a video clip of my bro-in-law, Jeremy, winning the downhill portion of a race last Saturday on his Jekyll (he's the one on the black Jekyll w/ yellow tires). Also look for Thunderchild on his yellow 5000...

Hmm... how about:
- '03 Ellsworth Double Dare SL, black
- Romic Shock
- '03 BoXXer World Cup
- Hopey
- Mavic 26" D321 rims on Chris King hubs
- Michelin rubber, run in tubeless mode - Hey, we're dreaming, right?
- SRAM XO
- Since we're dreaming here... SRAM trigger shifters that work!
- Profile Racing SS 3 piece CroMo cranks
- E13 DRS chainguide & bashguard
- Atomic Labs Flat / SPD combo pedals
- Easton DH carbon riser bars
- Thompson seatpost
- Thompson stem
- Thompson anything else they decide to make, I'll buy it at the drop of a hat!!!
- Chris King Headset
- Speed V saddle (make that 5 of them, I kill one every few months)
- Ti front rings, 22 tooth and 32 tooth, 5 bolt compact
- SRAM chain & rear cassette
- Grimeca system 11 hydraulic brakes
That should about cover it, I think. Oh, I might as well throw in an HID bar / helmet light combo, so I can ride at night and still be able to see for miles. And a Carbon Fibre Troy Lee Designs fullface helmet to mount the helmet light on. And... woops, it's late, I gotta catch some ZZZzzzzs, and I can go on all night long. :)

Are those your bikes or your dream bikes?
The refurbed 957 looks classic, I sold mine to a friend, now I want to buy it back!
If the Oz is yours, I see you still have the Xlink.
Both well kept immacualte machines - how do I follow that?
-
Don't have a dream bike per say, but any of these 3 would do :D

Sorry. Couldn't resist. One of these days, I'm going to have to take a real Downhill bike for a ride and see what all the fuss is about. Considering how little I notice any sort of additional weight to my bike as it is, and how much I like soft suspension, I'd probably go out and do something stupid. Like buy one... :D
-
My dream bike is, of course, my own Blue Crush (Oz)
also for a dream road bike, an Aegis Victory (just ordered frame), but what I also really, really want is a white Foes Fly with either a Shiver DC or Foes fork, the Precision Billet drivetrain I already have, Hopey, of course, and lots of other cool stuff.
-
nope not mine..the 957 belongs to HArv aka redshift and the OZ is(JEMs...thanks OP(added 5th March 2003)) ....I forget but it in the old forums galleries......dream bikes none the less.
-
I like any bike I can get on and ride. I love my old Pro-flex 856. It just climbs so well and is quick and agile.
-
Tirade with Noleen Nr-2 and WTB tires with thin side walls. hehehehe
-
:D ::) ;D :o I have to pick the titus switchblade, since the dream would be so costly, it would have to be a do-all bike.
psylo or fox fork, xtr drivetrain, hope mini discs, cris king headset/hubs, crossmax rims, wtb saddle, easton bar, odi grips, hutchinson tires, thomson stem/post, and the new time freeride pedals. Sluuurrrrpppp!!!!
-
'03 Santa Cruz Heckler:
-5th Element upgrade
-hand polished upgrade
-Truvativ Hussefelt crankset w/ Sealex SL bb
-SRAM X.0 drivetrain
-Time ATAC Z pedals
-Easton cockpit
-ODI grips (Yeti GS size)
-King headset
-RS Psylo SL
-Avid Mech. Disc brakes
-WTB Speed V saddle
-Intense DH 2.35 tires
-WTB Laserdisc DH wheels and hubs
This 'DREAM' bike will be a reality by fall '03!!!
-
dam disco u had a super nice bike spec'd till u hit upon the RS pyslo...
a bike that good deseveres a better fork...
theres plenty of better SC's and a few short travel DCs that'll still allow u to pedal well and offer the ride a DC can only provide...
defintly look into teh entire Sherman lineup.... ;D
-
The only reason I put that in there is because my current Psylo XC is working well for me now, and I have no experience w/ other longer travel sc's or shorter travel dc's.
As always, I'm very open to suggestions and opinions for my spec.
-
if u wanna stay SC look into a FOX vanilla RLC.
or a sherman Flick/firefly...
or if a DC tickels your fancy get a Sherman slider DC, or a 03 boXXer race (set to 6")..
both of those forks can be ridden quite easily as a Epic/all mountian type ride....
certainly not XC, but the rest of your parts spec aint XC anyways.... ;)
p.s. the Intense tires u listed are DRY specific tread... hope u realise that... :o
they are beyond teerrible in teh WET... :'(
-
I checked out the Flick after reading your first post...It looks like a good choice.
The tires are some that you actually recommended to me a while back in a thread on the old forum, I'm in so. Arizona and we just went through our monsoon season, that means extremely dry conditions for a long, long time.
-
ok, so I spent some time with MS Excel and a few web sites to completely spec out a Foes Fly with Curnutt rear shock and Shiver DC fork. It all added up to a little over 6 grand. wow!! thats probably about what I've spent on the Oz, geez, I hope not. but the Oz was spread over a couple of years so it didn't hurt as much, but I'm not done yet.
anyway, the Specialized Big Hit Expert (I think thats the one - its all silver) lists for about 2700 with a Junior T fork. thats much more realistic and may be doable.
I have been fantasizing about Plattekill and Killington during this snow storm (2 feet right now and still coming down real good) and I think I need a pseudo DH bike in addition to the Oz and the yet to be built awesome road bike, so right now my dream bike is the Big Hit Expert. I wonder how much a shop would charge to swap the Jr. T out for a Shiver DC?
-
prolly around a 400$ to swap to a Shiver...
good choice on the BIGHIT expert...
once u ride it, your OZ will never leave the closet again... :o
heres a half-decent shot of my 03 Expert on Grousse...
http://idriders.com/cgi-bin/album.pl?photo=03-02-09-Fromme/IMG_0003.jpg
oh and bikes are cheaper in Canada. if u can get across the border to purchase, the Expert is only about 3600$CDN...
p.s. teh fact your 6G$ into your OZ is more then a little OMG....hope your happy with it... :(
-
Hey Ian, nice bike. Med size feel any any different? Now this defies the laws of physics, you talked Dennis into a Bighit. Dennis, enjoy it. Now you can keep your OZ as a show bike. Rich :o
-
IFO,
that Big Hit sure looks awesome. how come you have a Manitou? did you swap out the fork too? the Specialized website says it comes with a Marzocchi. Did you change anything else? cheaper in Canada? pick one up for me, ship it to me, and then I'll think about whether I should pay you back or not!! ;D
anyway, I don't think I spent 6G's on the Oz, maybe more like 4.5G or 5G, but I'm still spending. It was just a thing (and still is) with me to build an amazing bike where I got to pick all the parts instead of someone else. I am VERY happy with it, can't wait to get the Fox fork and discs installed. The Oz is very much of an ongoing project. the CF frame just inspired me, I guess.
"Now this defies the laws of physics, you talked Dennis into a Bighit. Dennis, enjoy it. Now you can keep your OZ as a show bike. Rich "
Nah, the Oz will be ridden, and ridden hard. If I do manage to scrape enough money together to get a Big Hit, I will have to travel to use it. no mountains here on Long Island!!
however, Plattekill (one of 5 best mountain biking ski areas according to Bike mag) is only 2 or 2.5 hours away, and I don't work in the summer!!
-
first off my 03 BIGHIT expert is a Small...
secondly i bought it frame only...everything on my bike is hand picked cuz its what i wanna have on it...
just like your "crush'd OZ"... :D
p.s. i went small cuz i knew the geo. of teh BIGHIT so well already, i knew a Small would actually be better for my riding style...
i had to strecth the cockpit a tad, but i was looking for a reason to get a RACEFACE diablous stem anyways...i can still get proper leg extension on teh small to pedal effectivly, yet also have a huge amount of standover and room to move about teh bike when riding techy sections... and im 6' on the dot to... :)
my basic build kit looks like this:
03 BIGHIT expert (dreamy silver) no its not actually polished althou it appears to be...
01 Manitou Xvert carbon DH 7.3" travel
Grimeca system 11 hydros 203/165mm
RaceFace Diablous stem,NS DH cranks,BB/realseal headset
WTB speed V saddle
Easton EA70 monkeybar
SRAM 9.0 drivetrain/with a 13$ Acera shimano E-type frt.D
SRAM pc59 chain (9 speed of course)
26/24" SUN doublewide rims (gotta get em mounted yet)
26x2.8 Michelin comp32
24x3.0 Duro wildlife leopard
Azonic fusion MAG flat pedals
ODI yeti full length grips
BMX-style metal bar-end plugs...
only thing left to get for my ride is the new 03 Easton EA70 seatpost...
http://www.eastonbike.com/COMPONENTS/post.ea70.html
that seatpost is MINE.... :-*
-
gotcha, everyone's got a dream! 8)
-
IFO,
since you bought your bike as a frame, may I ask you how much you got it for? Did you get it with shock? also, if you don't mind my asking, about how much do you think you spent on it altogether? thanks
also, if you're 6 ft and ride a small, I assume that I at 5'7.5" (that last .5" is VERY important!) that I would need the micromini size. true?
thanks for the input.
-
If I could get my large 5500c on a diet, down to 23lbs, it would be my dream bike. Already it is down to 26lbs, and I know I could knock off another pound, but a pound isn't worth it. Three would be.
Anyway, I've owned steel, alum, ti and carbon hardtails. I've ridden/demoed a few fullies and nothing has beat out the ride of my 5500 yet, except on the weight grounds. Long hauls are a bit for me on it.
-
Dennis i paid about 1650$cdn taxs in...including the shock...but my price is a "Bro-deal" from a bike shop i know REAL well... the price on most of the 03 BIGHIT frames are around 1800$cdn.
almost all bike companies include the shock unless speicfically stated as NOT included....in fact very few companies DONT include the shock...
i also convinced a riding buddy to buy a 03 Expert in Small size aswell, adn he's about 5'10" maybe... hes fine on it...
i tink you'd still be able to ride it... but of course your seatpost would proly have to be one of the telescopic versions.....
http://www.norco.com/press/norco_axiomseat_0302.htm
let me know if u need more info..
as far as cost its hard to say cuz alot of my gear is used or transferred from other bikes...but if i added up the entire bike in terms of new gear at full prices it'd easily be over 7$G cdn...
hell my fork alone retial'd at 2750$cdn... :o
p.s. the 03 Expert BIGHIT isnt avaialble frameonly...luckily i was able to convince my LBS to sell me, and my buddy each one... :P
they had to tear down the Expert bikes and put the parts onto DH frames.... :-*
-
I'm happy with My bike, it's the time to ride I dream about.....
Steve O
-
Amen. Wish I had more time to ride too. I think I've only hit the trails about 5 times since November! That's disgusting.
-
you guys are soooo right. I almost feel like I've lost track of what's important. Sitting inside during the winter its easy to concentrate on the bike. I guess I have a bit of a thing about equipment, but when I do ride (road ride on warm winter day on crappy, ill-fitting road bike) I remember why the bicycle is so important to me. What a great feeling of freedom! no worries about speed limits!!
read the new issue of Bike. its a great mag, about the ride more than the equipment. the section on the four essential elements of cycling (momentum, slope, balance, and i forget the other one) is nothing short of genius. I am going to copy it and hand it out to my students, its as much about physics as cycling but is all about living well. do yourself a favor and read it.
-
probably an
'03 Heckler with 5th element, a Talas Fox Forx
Sram stuff, disc brakes, carbon bar, Thompson post and stem, Speed V saddle. wheels..that i don't know!, etc, etc, etc and not be a [smiley=diaper.gif] baby about ridng it like it should be.
the Oz is still a dream to ride, though
the 857 started it all, with many, many memories and dreams coming true on that frame! :-*
-
i know a good way to spend 7000-8000...plus another 5000 (wife would file)...i would have to say my #1 dream bike would be an ibis bow ti fully decked out with all the lightest [smiley=nod.gif]
.....peace

If we are dreaming I wish someone could make a bike that would make me ride like Brian Lopes ;D ;D ;D ;D. dmc
-
well, i guess u guys will all know by now, that my dream frame is an oz ;)
with my parts on it, but with these bits replacing some of mine...
easton ec70 seatpost
avid discs
i was gonna say ti eggbeaters, but i had a set of ti onza's and the spindles were too soft [wore out quick] so i'll stick with my standard eggs
a set of sid world cup forks [with the carbon crown/steerer]
an xo deraileur
chris king discotech hubs and a set of mavic disc specific rims
other than that, i'm happy with what i've currently got...
