IMHO.............................
Short Answer?
NO
Long Answer & Reasons:
It's too short- an 856 type shock is 200mm in length.
The spring is way too heavy, but you could change it. The heaviest spring listed for an 856 type frame with springs is 400lb and that was if you weigh well over 230lb, so this 800lb spring is fine if you weigh 500lb + ?? (I hope not, or you'll have a heart attack getting your leg over the bike! <GRIN>)
An 856 shock doesn't technically have an "eye to eye" length because it doesn't sit on two bolt through tubes (eyes?) as per the one in your picture.
It sits on one bolt through tube at the frame seat post end and then bolts to the suspension strut via a tapered split collet and a bolt straight into the end (i.e. in line with the travel).
Have a look at
"'96 856, 756, Animal & Beast Strut Assembly" in the "How Tos" section at
http://idriders.com/proflex/resources/97_spc657_strut.pdf
As I think this is the correct diagram for a 856. ??
But apart from all that it's fine! (NOT!)
[The reason I say this is because I am constantly amazed at the ingenuity of members of this forum and someone could probably prove me wrong and make it work! (Now there's a challenge!)

Hi Jinder,
check out this on my Gallery, (Junkster's gallery):

With a little modifying an 856 strut adapter could easily be made, (only a cone recess in the 856 strut - hardly any modifying needed). The shock length doesn't have to be a problem - I fitted a shorter Stratos Air shock to the rear of my K2 Proflex 5000 with two home made adapters and it works fine. (I don't have specialist tools).
Deano and Tmaybee's galleries have far better mods than me for other types of shocks. (They have the proper tools). Also check out the earlier postings on the forum - there are a few more

Cool, thanks!

dude, i would give modding a go if you have the tools and if the shock is suited to the frame.... like colin said . otherwise keep looking! (unfortunately)

IMHO again............
From looking at it again, I also don't think it's got enough travel to be much use.
An 856 type shock (e.g. ODS) has approx. 40mm of travel.
If this shock has less than this then the rear swing arm will travel a relative amount less than the intended travel. I.e. you'll have a suspension bike with very short rear travel.
However, this could be desirable............but I think the weight offset of a suspension bike over a rigid must be made up by reasonable travel to allow continuous pedalling over all terrain and increased comfort and control.

Jinder,
Where on earth did you get that shock. It looks like it has about 10 mm of travel to it, and a spring to support a gorilla.
