Title: Noleen shocks
Post by: uk856 on September 07, 2004, 08:48:12 pm
Help... Can anyone tell me where I can access to pictorial information on noleen shocks. I am trying to revive an 856. Ebay has quite a few, but usually the descriptions are incomplete as to front, rear or proflex/K2. Any help would be great. I have tried the usual websites.

The 856 doesn't use noleen shocks (unless its been upgraded) they came with a girvin ODS damper with a 2 stage elastomer doing the spring duties, some have replaced the elastomers with conventional springs (kit form).
I have some info on these shocks, I could email it to you if its of any use.

Simon

Thanks for the reply, I want to replace the old shocks back and front with noleen shocks and wondered what I need. They all look so different on Ebay. The Nr1,2,3,4 seem to look the same apart from the attacment points, any reference to how or if they will fit an 856 would be great.

thanks

Neil

the 856 will use the same shock as a x57 or 98 1000,2000,3000.The world cup frame requires a bolt at the top frame mount and a cone type fitting at the bottom which fits into  matching cone shaped depession in the swingarm. The best picture is actually that of a risse shock

The noleen for the crosslink will have a normal sized mount at the top but a large bushing at the bottom to take the bottom axle atthe base of the shock.

As far as the nollen shock type goes the nr1 has no adjustable damping, the nr2 has adjustble rebound damping via a knurleed collar. The nr4 will also have a piggyback resevoir as well as adjustable compression damping.

All three shocks will have been fitted to the rear of various x57s, and 98 models whilst only the one and two will have been used on girvin/nolleen crosslinks. The nr5 smartshock was never used on a wc frame but may have seen on a crosslink

Having said that i am not 100 pr cent sure that the shock from a 857 will fit a 856,but i am 99.9 percent sure that the 97 and 98 bikes are identical as far as shock fitment goes.

Hi,
check out my gallery, (under Junkster). I am running a Stratos air/oil shock using a simple alloy adapter a made.  [smiley=nod.gif]

let me know if you need any help (not that, after seeing half the crackpot fabrications of mine you'll want any mind!)   [smiley=beer.gif]

Dan

Thanks for the info, I am still thinking of how to mount a front disk, maybe I could adapt an A2Z rear disk adapter

hi, personally I wouldn't waste the £30-£40 on the commercial adapter. IMHO. Are you wanting to fix a disc brake to a set of Vectors?

Yeh I was looking for an easy bolt on adaption, I can't weld, but can usually fabricate with bits and bobs.

thanks

Well, if you are still looking, I stumbled upon some brand new dampers on ebay. The guy has a few of them.

Hello,
I also have a 856beast with original girvin ODS shocks front and back, and the elastomer has gone hard.   Can I ask, did you find a solution with the noleen shocks, or have you fitted different shocks? If so, what type, and where can I obtain them.
regards
Peter

peter the mcu springs or elastomers can be softened temporarily,by immersing in warm/hot water or 10 sec bursts in a microwave.Obviously the shock needs to be pulled off the bike and pulled to peices.......Risse and stratos do direct substitutes, any  x57 or 98 1000,2000,3000 noleens will go on the rear but not the givin vetor fork and several guys here have made adapters to fit "Normal" shocks fit our one off struts.Look throught the gallery read any "shock" threads and post up any resulting queries. The last option is to fit a set of steel springs to your ods units
