Title: ques for Oz owners
Post by: Dennis on August 23, 2004, 07:37:40 am
hey guys,
it seems that my rear derailleur hanger keeps bending which screws up shifting and drivetrain, obviously.
I know its made of aluminum and bends easily and I can see it getting bent during a crash, but I haven't crashed lately and yet the hanger has bent. Its easy to bend back into alignment, but I  am wondering if others of  you have encounter this problem and if anyone has devised a way around it.
thanks for any info concerning your experiences. btw, I am running a Precision Billet rear der, but doubt that has anything to do with the hanger bending.

Must say haven't had this problem but it must be annoying if its a regular occurance, having said that I'd rather have one that bends than one that breaks,
have a look at this they have a great reputation and list a Proflex hanger.

they also do to order.

two things i'd try (check)...

the dropouts and

swap the der with either a sram or shimano

it may not be just quite right after being bent back, either

Just bend it back. If you have a soft hanger it will stiffen after a few times of bending. I have seen parts that have not been the right alloy orfactory hardness before.

Get a new hanger and see if it is better. My stock hanger has never given me a problem. I use a shimano xt shifter.

Dennis-the Billet is known for being a light AND flexy unit, try another RD if you have it for a contrast.  Also be certain you have the correct chain length by cycling the rear suspension through full movement with the big/big sprocket combo, cut to fit with as  little slack as possible at the tightest point of the swingarms arc.

thanks for the replies and advice you guys. It isn't the rear der. (mech), I have checked it many times and it is not bent. It is definitely the hanger that is bending. It has happened twice, once from a crash, and I can't figure out how it bent the second time. Maybe the bike fell over when I was washing it or something, but I can't remember when.
I think I will get a replacement hanger or two and see if that helps. Maybe it is just a weak hanger, but my LBS said that he sees this alot on bikes with alu der. (mech.) hangers. Must have something to do with our very narrow singletrack around here and the close proximity of branches and bushes.
I will have to take some pics of the trails I ride on  and post them in my gallery. Even though this is "only" Long Island, NY, the trails are pretty nasty, and I've ridden in Baja, Washington State, Vermont, Penn. etc. and these are the tightest trails I've ever seen.
well, thanks again for the input.
