Title: Rear brake adaptor....!!! ( HAMMERHEAD )
Post by: Proflexman on June 28, 2004, 03:57:41 am
I have a carbon frame and way back contacted Callum for a mount so that i could use my Hope's and so i parted company with the dosh and duely Callum sent me one, a Hammerhead.
Now i was going to make these using their design ( nothing like a good idea ) and re produce some in carbon.
But two problems here, firstly as its a copy of the Hammerhead it will only fit the bikes in that range like my carbon one.
And the second and more importantly, i would be breaching copywright and patents here.
So before i do send any out i will wait to hear from those parties  concerned to see how they feel because i am sure that they will see this post.
And if you guys dont want me doing this then say so.
Just covering myself here lads.

Do me one I wont tell anyone [smiley=laughing.gif]

If it breaks don't worry I wont sue it'll be on my son's bike, anyway he's always got the front one and young ones tend to bounce, ;)

seriously you know what your doing with carbon I'm sure they will make an excellent upgrade. :P

my opinion is you would be doing callum and hammer a disservice......post here  (http://www.topica.com/lists/855heads/read) and they may see it too

Why not contact Mike Billet and talk to him about it. I have not done an analysis of this in CF, but I am sure Mike would run one before he sent you a unit. I am a little worried about the heat transfer to the epoxy. Mike does work with a CF outfit already so getting a small piece like that should be no big deal if it is safe to do. I don't know if they patented this or not, but it is just not right to copy someone elses work if they are trying to make a commercial venture of it.

Hi there,

I already made a batch in Carbon Fibre for test and evaluation..

We had two problems.

Heat transfer, the calliper couldn't dissipate heat enough under severe conditions and the brake fluid boiled, changing to the same brake fluid as we used in formula one cars stopped the boiling problem, but then the plastic brake hose melted...!!

But if you ride in colder climates, or use cable brakes and don't use your brakes under extreme conditions, you might be ok.

As long as your pads don't degrade and glaze over...

You'll have to test and see what happens.

Problem #2

Manufacturing process... the methods of manufacture we investigated, created a high rate of rejects and wasted material...

Basically.. it just wasn't worth the time and trouble and expense making them in CF to sell as a venture.

I did make some HammerHeads in Titanium, and they were light.

Started when I guy sent a sheet to me and asked me to cut them up, and then I tracked down a supplier for titanium stock and had some made for myself.

Very light, but look the same as a regular HammerHead.

I know that there was one guy on here that made his own carbon fibre adapters for an oz by sandwiching the frame dropout, looked like a nice job but I am sure it was time consuming.

If you want to use the HammerHead design to make your own adapters, send me an email and I can help you get started.

Best regards,

Mike Billett

Mike - you got any of the ti adaptors left? How much did they work out at? Any idea of weight of the standard versus weight of the ti? And (finally!) what frames were they for - I'd be interested in one for a 957 to save weight over the Hammerhead I already have, and possibly one to replace the front Hammerhead on my old skool Marzocchi forks (formula standard - IS adaptor), and am also contemplating adaptors for my 955, and for an 97 beast I just got with an RDI long travel kit (it was 70 quid, and i'm a tad reluctant to spend half of that again for the adaptor!)... Any chance of a bulk buy discount (on either the ti or standard Hammerheads?!)

ian

ps - how did Cowpiss 04 go down? Was in exmoor DHing porlock hill - 4 miles of rocky rooty twisty single and doubletrack DH - on a 20 year old folding shopper bike, otherwise I'd have popped along :-)

I'm with Ian, if you have any of the Ti adapters for the 957 laying about, I'd be real interested as well.
