I've had my Phantom for about 3 years now, and I love it. However, one of the ONLY things I can dislike about my Phantom is the occasional roll-out. Nothing kills the moment like sneaking up on some unsuspecting prey, taking careful time and aim to line up your shot perfectly just to pull the trigger and be "shooting blanks". (After which you become the prey as your former victim turns and shoots you.) Or even just missing a shot or the jump on someone because you don't have one in the chamber...

I've heard some about the ASP Detent mod (read the entire thread here)
And I've used a Freak barrel (on other guns)

Now I want to know, from you, the community which is better. Stories, experiences, likes/dislikes, pros/cons, etc is all appreciated. Even better if you have exp with both.

ASP
Pros:
Use any unmodified (or modified) barrel.
Eliminates the chance to double feed.
Cheaper than a Freak kit and bored barrel.
Replacement parts readily available. (Home Depot)

Cons(?):
No ability to Underbore?

Freak
Pros:
Underbore for more E&C

Cons:
Price
No anti-double feed

Let your votes be cast!
^_^
Thanks.

I don't know if it's underboring or not, but I was tired of rollouts, and they still occasionally happened with the ASP mod, so I just put in the largest o-rings, so it's kinda like underboring, and I no longer get rollouts, even with those miniscule excuses for paintballs that are ever so popular.

i love my freak.

if you already have the inserts, its not that spendy to do.

also, i tried the ego/timmy nub detent, and i loved it.
(ive actually had it twice, but not the ASP's....)

Personally, I'd run both - Freak inserts are for paint-to-bore matching (and prevents rollouts if you're not overboring), while the detent mod combats rollouts and doublefeeds (but won't do squat for paint-to-bore matching).  The two are actually complementary.

With that in mind, if rollouts are your only issue at the moment, I'd run with Freak inserts.

I used to own Freak-bored barrels (a Fr-Antom I and a bored stock barrel) and they worked very well, but I always used them in conjunction with detent rings.  I ended up selling them along with my first Phantom, and now I'm using a Microshot in .684 and a Bigshot in .687, along with the rings.  Since my field paint tends to run small, so far I haven't needed the Bigshot.

ASP modded Phantom snubs are the best thing going for the Phantom. No double feeds ever. No roll outs either.
Use a tight bore barrel to increase efficiency.

AMEN. I got mine back in no time from Haveblue, and WOW. With reballs, trying, I can't get it to double feed or roll out. Even the packaging was professional. I was VERY impressed.

Bwahahahaha!  Sorry, I just have to giggle whenever somebody thinks the crap I do is 'professional'...  I'm not even a glorified drill press operator like some real professionals are...

I use the ASP roundhead body with cocker threads and a deadlywind with freaks.  No rollouts perfect shot every time.  I am super happy.

I say, get both.

I might actually have enough money soon to go ahead and get the detent mod finally, like I have wanted since it was announced.  Since I am still holding out hope to actually get to play at some point this year, it's now on my todo list.

This is how I roll.  I got myself a freak bored barrel from Nathan and then I got an offset breech with ASP detent mod a few months later and it sure seems to be a winning combination.

Roundheads are better than just the ASP modded Phantom. Closed bolt vs. breech as it it, closed bolt wins.

Still Playin' Woodsball with My Woodhandle Phantom

« Reply #13 on: January 25, 2011, 09:03:11 pm »

I have an ASP modified Phantom and have had pretty good luck with it stopping rollouts (but not completely).  I just bought a Frantom barrel and freak inserts to try to further improve my marker. From what I have read, I think that the Frantom will shoot even straighter and possibly improve efficiency. ASP for the double feeds and together both the freak inserts and ASP for rollouts.
Wink To go really OVERKILL against rollouts, I could put in a CCI detent and some nail polish and a piece of scotch tape.
On problem I have been noticing is the paint at the field that I play at seems to have alot of dimples or irregular shapes.  Huh? They are selling RPS marballizer which is a usually a good quality paint with an inherently slightly smaller bore. Week in and Week out, there seem to be numerous oblong/dimpled/irregular paintballs.
My Question...Will these consistently inconsistent balls cause more ball breakage in the freak barrel?

Depends as to HOW BAD they really look... I mean, if they resemble an egg, more so than a ball, I would bring the paint back to the proshop, and ask for a fresh batch. Don't let them serve you eggs, when what you really want is balls.
Oh, and don't need to go "overkill" on the breech by adding rings and nail polish when you already have a barrel kit. Just contact ANS gear, and buy a smaller insert you hear  Afro
